Last Monday we did a class on some basic journalism skills, like components of news stories and types of stories. I went over these topics and everyone took notes, then I gave out sample stories from TIME Magazine and had everyone figure out which type of story it was and why. I had the weekend to prepare everything so I think it worked out pretty well! Today I couldn't get to HL in time for the morning session due to more issues with this apartment, but I did a class for the afternoon session. I didn't know I was teaching a class until I got to HL so I kind of had to throw it together at the last minute. Despite that setback, I think it was okay and we talked about some important interviewing techniques. I'm doing it again tomorrow but since I know what's going on I will have time to get things organized beforehand. Overall I really like doing the classes, and it's good to see that they are getting mostly positive feedback. It's just too bad that I found out about HL so late and will only be back a couple times before I leave NYC! However, I might be back in NYC next summer with another internship and if that's the case I will definitely get involved with HL again, and hopefully will have more time.
